NOVAFON used in speech and language therapy

"NOVAFON devices can be used to target strength and relaxation, motor control, range of movement and sensory function such as touch and proprioception in the musculature relevant to swallowing and speech sound production (i.e. lips, tongue, jaw, cheeks plus phonatory and respiratory functions) in children and adults."
(Evemarie Haupt, specialist speech and language therapist, singer, lecturer and book author, member of the British Voice Association)

In voice therapy one of the main goals is to maintain a comfortable balance of tension between the muscles of voicing. Excessive or inappropriately placed laryngeal tension due to habits can cause voice problems. Other voice disorders can occur with paralysed vocal cords or vocal nodules. NOVAFON can be a helping hand in the process of regaining a physiological voice. Vibrations are between 50 and 100 Hz, both in the audible range, which is in the frequency range of the human voice. We recommend to use NOVAFON PRO for voice treatment. Simply apply vibrations for 5-10 minutes to the neck, shoulder or facial areas. Use the disk head for larger areas and the round head for small muscles and a more punctual treatment.

  • reduce the general neck and shoulder tension that contributes to Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD)

  • provide a soft laryngeal massage to reduce tension in the throat and laryngeal muscles

  • experience the phenomenon of resonance

  • help to stimulate physiological diaphragmatic breathing

  • decrease facial-oral tension for relaxed articulation

In the treatment of swallowing difficulties oral motor and sensory exercises play an important part. Sensory input was found to be integral to triggering the swallowing reflex. In deglutition sensory information about touch and pressure are transmitted over fibers to the brain. stiivii’s vibratory stimulus enhances sensory input, therefore increases brain excitability and serves as helping hand to trigger swallowing. We recommend to use NOVAFON PRO or NOVAFON POWER for dysphagia. Simply apply the vibrations for 5-10 minutes to the larynx or facial and neck muscles. Use the disk head for larger areas and the round head for small muscles and a more punctual treatment.

  • trigger the swallow reflex

  • improve swallowing with oral sensory exercises

  • provide intra and extra oral stimulation

  • stimulate the neck, larynx, cheeks and lips

  • 6 cm deep stimulation of the muscles, tissue, nerves and proprioceptors

  • increase oral tone and awareness

Head and neck cancer and its treatment frequently cause changes in both speech and swallowing. After surgery and radiotherapy the rate of motion of the jaw, tongue, lips and larynx can be poor/ affected. This can result from immobility of the structures due to scars and destruction through radiotherapy. NOVAFON can be used to increase mobility of the scar tissue, enhance sensory awareness in the areas treated with radiotherapy, reduce restrictions of motion and therefore be a useful device in the treatment of speech and swallowing disorders. We recommend to use NOVAFON PRO or NOVAFON CLASSIC for head and neck cancer.

  • reduce adhesion and soften scar tissue

  • reduce movement restrictions of the facial, neck and laryngeal structures

  • prevent from compensatory high muscle tension in neck and shoulder area

  • increase blood flow and cellular metabolism

Facial palsy or Bell’s palsy generally refers to weakness of the facial muscles due to temporary or permanent damage to the facial nerve. Researchers found a relaxed muscle to contract when it is stimulated by a vibratory stimulus with a frequency of 100-200 Hz. This is the so-called tonic vibration reflex (TVR) which can be recorded using EMG. All NOVAFON devices generate vibrations of 100 Hz. We recommend to use NOVAFON PRO or NOVAFON SOFT to apply to facial muscles. Simply apply the vibrations for 5 minutes to each side of the face, we recommend to start with the weaker side. Use the disk head for larger muscle strings and the round head for smaller muscles and a more punctual treatment.

  • use the tonic vibration reflex to contract weak muscles (100 Hz)

  • increase sensory stimulation

  • relax compensatory muscles (50 Hz)

  • reduce facial pain
